This issue is to discuss whether we should allow wildcards in the identifiers (network, station, location, channel) in the time series routing rules. If we think we need these it would be best to add them sooner rather than later.

On the plus side:

  • Wildcards would allow extremely flexible rule potential

On the down side:

  • A significant complexity is put on all interpreters of these rules; for example, a federating system, data access client, conflict detection system, etc.

If we did allow wildcards, I would advocate for limiting them to ? and * support.
