Buying Minecraft and directly trying to login to the FTB App gives error "auth97 response not successful" instead of proper explanation #1214

What is your suggestion?

A friend of mine recently bought Minecraft and directly after that he tried to authenticate via the FTB App.

The login to Microsoft is of course successful, but the App displays "auth97 response not successful" instead of giving a proper explanation of what went wrong.

This solution was that he needed to login via the official Minecraft Launcher first to set the "ingame" name.

The error should state that it's initially required to set the name first before trying to authenticate via the App.

This is an unhelpful error, that's on our side, we'll be pushing an update for this soon...

The most likely reason for this is that they need to first create their profile. They can do this via the vanilla launcher or via the minecraft website

Hi @MichaelHillcox , im running into the same issue. I hadnt had upgraded my Mojang Account to an XBOX Account yet.
This is the order of things I did:

  1. Tried to connect FTB App to my Minecraft account
  2. Did the auth process and received the error, that i did not have an xbox account yet
  3. Opened the original MC launcher and created an xbox account
  4. Re tried to connect FTB App with my minecraft account
  5. Getting error auth:97

I tried various things from deleting everything, clearing browsercaches and so on, but im lost for options now. Is there an applicable solution to that error?

Best
Leon

Hi @MichaelHillcox !
My friend encountered the same auth:97 error a couple days ago. The thing is that I bought him a Minecraft license and he immediately tried to log into FTB App. I can confirm that the problem can be solved if you initially go to Minecraft Launcher, create your nickname and go to play at least in the normal world. After that he was able to access the FTB App.

We're in the process of improving this error display code for our users. Right now, it's awaiting a new app release which we've been holding off of doing over the holidays.

Regarding your errors specifically. The number one way I've found for fixing this is manually logging into the https://minecraft.net website with your new account, then going to the profile page and setting a username. This should create your account properly so you'll be able to log into the app
