Ic. Box selector is general selector, it's not exclusive to patch vertex mode. I think it's good to not confuse user by extraneous tools use conditionality. M1 drag is occupied by hot functions in many modes, no way to replace it by 'do brand new box selection' one. Even in vertex mode M1 drag is used for brush vertex insertion with 0 selection (vertex mode is not exclusive to a primitive type), and for translation with selection (no need to actually grab a component).

Click on the canvas with present selection is technically available for adding functionality, not that it's definitely needed, since deselection keybind use has around the same complexity.
