For comparison:

MiSTerOS

reading /linux/zImage_dtb
6765321 bytes read in 457 ms (14.1 MiB/s)
## Flattened Device Tree blob at 0166ecd8

MiSTerArch

8487273 bytes read in 3155 ms (2.6 MiB/s)

Hypotheses:

fat32
u-boot config (less likely)
