Fable testing-holiday app feedback on iterations for the Screen Reader Assistive tech

Screen Reader Mobile vs Desktop, Voice over-NVDA, Chrome (on mobile) Firefox (on desktop)

• One participant tested twice (once on mobile, and compared to desktop)
• On mobile, user experienced the page refreshing itself, unprompted, causing user to lose their place
• On mobile, user kept experiencing the page jumping back to the top, also unprompted, again causing user to lose their spot
• On mobile, the on the table with the dates, holidays, and provinces all seem blurred (the lines between the sections are not clear/table is not structured clearly)
• On desktop, the same user did not experience the same issues
• Everything flowed quite easily, the pages were clear, and the only feedback is to fill in the empty rows under the Nationwide link (under the February 19th date, where the empty rows under the dates are meant to distinguish between the different provinces) for user these empty slots throws them off. It is perceived as something missing and inconsistent from rest of the table)
• This feedback was repeated by one other Screen Reader user

Screen Reader, using VoiceOver with Safari browser on a Mac desktop

• tester would like to have the select component applied to the date input section. The AT applied was not able to easily clarify if date input was properly being applied. VoiceOver was announcing ‘select replaced’ upon every press of up or down arrow key.

• when tapping the FR link multiple times, nothing happened to the page…there was no switching from EN to FR page. The page stayed as is on the En page….language toggle would not work on their mobile device
• requires tester to press the checkbox multiple attempts before accepting an answer, for the radio group prompt

• When participant went to the step which asks to choose Type of Holiday, the checkbox component was not confirming the options chosen (not indicating any sign of being checked off)…until after a few attempts

Screen Reader, on a laptop, using a Mac, using VoiceOver on Edge browser

• the voiceover software seems to be repeating the text on the side nav, as user is trying to go down the list of links, making it more tedious to get to the submit a holiday link
• the checkbox component is not being responsive-user is unable to check any box under Type of holiday
• once prompted to fix the error, the checkbox component is not being responsive on this software
• there is an issue with the link in the error instructions, it does not bring user to the section of the form where error is…user is not able to identify exactly where error on page is

Screen Reader VoiceOver with Safari on Mac (Checkbox component is not responsive to the AT/possibly to do with the brows)

• Screen Reader NVDA with Firefox on Windows (Difficult to use form controls (e.g. checkboxes))

• Screen Reader NVDA with Firefox on Windows *task not complete ( Difficult to close or exit a dialog or popup (testing error message, once trying to fix error, the error message remained)

• tester tried modify the potential date selection errors, the error continued to appear.

Screen Reader VoiceOver with Safari on iOS (When navigating through the site, instructions are read aloud that refer to navigation with a keyboard, which does not apply to mobile devices. This information is helpful for computers but should be changed for the mobile version of the site)...navigation prompt on device is meant for desktops, and user is testing mobile…the software is not being accurately synced to the right device

• Screen Reader TalkBack with Firefox on Android

• user is unable to expand the menu button on their mobile device

• form labels/names are being repeated by the tech/seems there’s a glitch

• when uploading a file, talkback notified tester to choose file, and having chosen a file, the talkback repeats that no file has been chosen…the talkback software is not responding to active user’s commands

• Items on page is not visible to VoiceOver
• Content on page does not seem to be interacting with VoiceOver
• User's experience indicates that the site is not working, as link to a new page does not display any content, at some point in their journey
• When on the About this app page, the VoiceOver seems to only narrate the Code, Design, and Guidance badges, just as text, versus opening the links associated with these tabs/badges onto new pages
