Liquid in sidenotes?

Hi,
thank you so much for this terrific port of Tufte's CSS to Jekyll!

Is it possible to use liquid in sidenotes? I would like to use Jekyll Scholar for references in the sidenotes but couldn't figure out how. I have tried several things but nothing worked so far. The only way of combining sidenotes with Jekyll Scholar I know of would be to use raw HTML. Is there a better solution?
