Many photos and videos are showing "Error Loading Image"

The bug

I imported all my Google photos to immich and they used to work very well, but now, I can't open many photos and videos, they just show "Error Loading Image"
I tried refreshing thumbnails and rerunning all the jobs but nothing works.
Even album photos are not showing and some people photos as well.

I am very concerned because I deleted all my photos from Google after I though they were successfully imported

I am running Immich as a docker image

I just updated my docker compose, removed the microservices container, and updated the other containers according to the latest docker-compose , but still, the issue exists.

Fixed for me. 150'000 images generated within three hours. All previews available again

Same is happening for me. On the version - 1.113.0. I had rerun the thumbnail job for all, but that did not seem to fix it.
I also removed the image and then tried to reupload, same issue.

Funny thing is that this is happening for images only for few specific dates. Images uploaded before or post that date just work fine.

Okay it took longer then a minute because the immich app will now refuse to notice my "old" pictures that aren't on the server. Anyways I downloaded a new picture to my phone and let it sync it to the server manually and the issue still occurs. The image shows up as "error loading image". There aren't any errors in the logs of the server container just some webhook stuff.

I seem to have somewhat fixed it by just switching the thumbnail quality to be JPG instead of WEBP, which somehow seemed to at least get it to redo the thumbnails for all the missing images. Hopefully switching it back later will then redo the thumbnails in WEBP

Update: yeah that seems to have fixed it, I switched it back and just ran it on "all" images which did "make it go".

Weirdly enough the problem comes back when uploading new files. I've got to manually run the "generate thumbnails" job for it to actually properly generate the missing thumbnails, after that it works like normal

Can you do docker compose down then docker container rm 7707f5d23d5b then docker compose up

Then run generate thumbnail for all again, this will fix the issue

Alright, I did what you suggested and thumbnail generation is currently running, no issues so far. There is no immich_microservices in the list of running containers and I assume that's what we wanted to achieve.

So I was stuck with an old immich-microservice. I can keep on top of having that (or similar) removed if need be in the future.

Maybe I have misunderstood something with regards to docker pull/docker down/docker up procedure I use. I understood it that docker compose pull && docker compose down && docker compose up -d would be sufficient (it's been working well with e.g. Home Assistant) as update steps but I'm welcoming a more fail safe, repeatable way if there is one.

The issue with that process is that if a service is removed from the compose file those commands won't prune the already running container so you need to run the compose commands with --remove-orphans or manually delete it yourself.

Okay.... I did something stupid.... I had above 80.000 errors on the repair page. Errors like:

Great... I initially thought that I had interrupted migration or similar so the path for all my thumbs were destroyed, so i ran this script:

The uploads location is stock:

The external mounted libraries, mounted in

etc.

This however also cleared out my original files.

Okay I were a bit too fast in assessing what the source of the problem were, but still wow... I happy saw this, when it had only gone through half, and next: thank good for a good backup. :-)

I know deletion of my files is entirely my own mistake, however I still do not understand from this thread, where the source of this problem is. (Yes the script)... but what causes the failure to find the previously made thumb files?

Just for info: I have restored my pictures, and will start with a clean Immich installation, at next version/fix.

I think, it's my older phone(secondary phone - Android), i didn't start to backup my main phone - iOS yet. Far as i see the images are suffixed with WA so i think these photos are from Whatsapp Gallery

I've uploaded a bunch of photos and only some of them are corrupted after uploading to immich. I can view them before uploading.

As far as i can tell, all of them are pics received via Whatsapp. But, a couple of other Whatsapp photos from the same batch are displayed fine.

Same issue for me. I am on 1.120.2 with a fresh install just hours ago. I just dumped 30k photos so I cant tell if they are Whatsapp photos.

In your case, the server is likely generating them. You can check in the Administration > Jobs page
