How to prevent duplicate photos from being linked to multiple albums?

Hello everyone,

First of all, thank you for the amazing work on Immich! I really appreciate the effort put into this project.
I’d like to describe a scenario I encountered, and I apologize in advance if the answer to this has already been addressed in the documentation or another topic.

Scenario:

1. I uploaded a photo (e.g., 1.png) to an album named X.
2. Later, I tried to upload the same photo (1.png) to a different album named Y (by mistake).

Observed Behavior:

• The photo is now linked to both albums, X and Y (likely as a reference rather than a duplicate file).

Expected Behavior:

• If the photo is identified as a duplicate, I’d like to avoid adding it to the current album (Y) entirely.

• Ideally, the system would notify me that the photo is a duplicate and prevent it from being added to album Y.

Question:

• Is there a way to configure Immich to avoid linking duplicate photos to multiple albums automatically? Any advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated!
