Hey there,

I cannot find any way to use the XMM 7360 LTE on any linux based hostsystem. It is built in an HP G5 Elitebook and I have to carry an extra LTE modem. Since the notebook has only two usb slots, it is pretty annoying for mobile use case (the two slots are no problem of intel, though).

The respective output of lspci -nnk is as followed:

3b:00.0 Wireless controller [0d40]: Intel Corporation Device [8086:7360] (rev 01) Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device [103c:8337]

No kernel module is mentioned.

Sorry, I'm afraid that there was no plan to enable XMM7360 dongle on Linux. As I know, intel only enabled it on windows platform.

It's sad to hear that. This wwan adapter is built in an enterprise level notebook with no simple option to replace that. I found that it is also built in other business notebooks (HP, Lenovo, etc.).

Yes, on Windows it runs out of the box. However, for several purposes I have to run my PC under linux, amongst other things one client uses G/On boot sticks (bases on Fedora) as BYOD solution. These things are no little private sandbox games.

Are there no ways to get sources and to compile a kernel module by myself? What are factors for Intel to decide which hardware will be supported under Linux and which not?

His patch took care of evsel->prev_raw_counts, but the above backtraces
are about evsel->counts, so fix that instead.

@sys-oak
I see there have been commits pushed related this to this, does this mean support for linux is actually in development?
I think the Windows driver for the XMM 7360 (aka Fibocom L850-GL) actually works in USB mode as well, but the driver actually switches the mode for you. I think if we were to reverse engineer the part of the driver that does this that is all we would need since allegedly USB mode is already supported by Linux.

This patch fixes deadlock warning if removing PWM device
when CONFIG_PROVE_LOCKING is enabled.

This issue can be reproceduced by the following steps on
the R-Car H3 Salvator-X board if the backlight is disabled:

 # cd /sys/class/pwm/pwmchip0
 # echo 0 > export
 # ls
 device export npwm power pwm0 subsystem uevent unexport
 # cd device/driver
 # ls
 bind  e6e31000.pwm  uevent  unbind
 # echo e6e31000.pwm > unbind

The sysfs unexport in pwmchip_remove() is completely asymmetric
to what we do in pwmchip_add_with_polarity() and commit 0733424
("pwm: Unexport children before chip removal") is a strong indication
that this was wrong to begin with. We should just move
pwmchip_sysfs_unexport() where it belongs, which is right after
pwmchip_sysfs_unexport_children(). In that case, we do not need
separate functions anymore either.

We also really want to remove sysfs irrespective of whether or not
the chip will be removed as a result of pwmchip_remove(). We can only
assume that the driver will be gone after that, so we shouldn't leave
any dangling sysfs files around.

This warning disappears if we move pwmchip_sysfs_unexport() to
the top of pwmchip_remove(), pwmchip_sysfs_unexport_children().
That way it is also outside of the pwm_lock section, which indeed
doesn't seem to be needed.

Moving the pwmchip_sysfs_export() call outside of that section also
seems fine and it'd be perfectly symmetric with pwmchip_remove() again.

So, this patch fixes them.

are about evsel->counts, so fix that instead.

As Jiqun Li reported in bugzilla:

https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=202883

sometimes, dead lock when make system call SYS_getdents64 with fsync() is
called by another process.

monkey running on android9.0

1.  task 9785 held sbi->cp_rwsem and waiting lock_page()
2.  task 10349 held mm_sem and waiting sbi->cp_rwsem
3. task 9709 held lock_page() and waiting mm_sem

so this is a dead lock scenario.

Below potential deadlock will happen between three threads:
Thread A		Thread B		Thread C
- f2fs_do_sync_file
 - f2fs_write_checkpoint
  - down_write(&sbi->node_change) -- 1)
			- do_page_fault
			 - down_write(&mm->mmap_sem) -- 2)
			  - do_wp_page
			   - f2fs_vm_page_mkwrite
						- getdents64
						 - f2fs_read_inline_dir
						  - lock_page -- 3)
  - f2fs_sync_node_pages
   - lock_page -- 3)
			    - __do_map_lock
			     - down_read(&sbi->node_change) -- 1)
						  - f2fs_fill_dentries
						   - dir_emit
						    - compat_filldir64
						     - do_page_fault
						      - down_read(&mm->mmap_sem) -- 2)

Since f2fs_readdir is protected by inode.i_rwsem, there should not be
any updates in inode page, we're safe to lookup dents in inode page
without its lock held, so taking off the lock to improve concurrency
of readdir and avoid potential deadlock.

As per changes in include/linux/jbd_common.h for avoiding the
bit_spin_locks on RT ("fs: jbd/jbd2: Make state lock and journal
head lock rt safe") we do the same thing here.

We use the non atomic __set_bit and __clear_bit inside the scope of
the lock to preserve the ability of the existing LIST_DEBUG code to
use the zero'th bit in the sanity checks.

As a bit spinlock, we had no lockdep visibility into the usage
of the list head locking. Now, if we were to implement it as a
standard non-raw spinlock, we would see:

@sys-oak

@knuxyl there is just a #7 in that commits so github thinks it belongs to this issue...

His patch took care of evsel->prev_raw_counts, but the above backtraces
are about evsel->counts, so fix that instead.

Below potential deadlock will happen between three threads:
Thread A		Thread B		Thread C
- f2fs_do_sync_file
 - f2fs_write_checkpoint
  - down_write(&sbi->node_change) -- 1)
			- do_page_fault
			 - down_write(&mm->mmap_sem) -- 2)

						    - compat_filldir64
						     - do_page_fault
						      - down_read(&mm->mmap_sem) -- 2)

The way relocation moves data extents is by creating a reloc inode and
preallocating extents in this inode and then copying the data into these
preallocated extents. Once we've done this for all of our extents,
we'll write out these dirty pages, which marks the extent written, and
goes into btrfs_reloc_cow_block(). From here we get our current
reloc_control, which _should_ match the reloc_control for the current
block group we're relocating.

However if we get an ENOSPC in this path at some point we'll bail out,
never initiating writeback on this inode. Not a huge deal, unless we
happen to be doing relocation on a different block group, and this block
group is now rc->stage == UPDATE_DATA_PTRS. This trips the BUG_ON() in
btrfs_reloc_cow_block(), because we expect to be done modifying the data
inode. We are in fact done modifying the metadata for the data inode
we're currently using, but not the one from the failed block group, and
thus we BUG_ON().

(This happens when writeback finishes for extents from the previous
group, when we are at btrfs_finish_ordered_io() which updates the data
reloc tree (inode item, drops/adds extent items, etc).)

Fix this by writing out the reloc data inode always, and then breaking
out of the loop after that point to keep from tripping this BUG_ON()
later.

The library supports aggregation of objects into other objects only if
the parent object does not have a parent itself. That is, nesting is not
supported.

Aggregation happens in two cases: Without and with hints, where hints
are a pre-computed recommendation on how to aggregate the provided
objects.

Nesting is not possible in the first case due to a check that prevents
it, but in the second case there is no check because the assumption is
that nesting cannot happen when creating objects based on hints. The
violation of this assumption leads to various warnings and eventually to
a general protection fault [1].

Before fixing the root cause, error out when nesting happens and warn.

When l2tp tunnels use a socket provided by userspace, we can hit
lockdep splats like the below when data is transmitted through another
(unrelated) userspace socket which then gets routed over l2tp.

This issue was previously discussed here:
https://lore.kernel.org/netdev/[email protected]/

The solution is to have lockdep treat socket locks of l2tp tunnel
sockets separately than those of standard INET sockets. To do so, use
a different lockdep subclass where lock nesting is possible.

Now that we have open file cache, it is possible that another client
deletes the file and DP will not know about it. Then IO to MDS would
fail with BADSTATEID and knfsd would start state recovery, which
should fail as well and then nfs read/write will fail with EBADF.
And it triggers a WARN() in nfserrno().

[ Upstream commit 86a41ea ]

When l2tp tunnels use a socket provided by userspace, we can hit
lockdep splats like the below when data is transmitted through another
(unrelated) userspace socket which then gets routed over l2tp.

This issue was previously discussed here:
https://lore.kernel.org/netdev/[email protected]/

The solution is to have lockdep treat socket locks of l2tp tunnel
sockets separately than those of standard INET sockets. To do so, use
a different lockdep subclass where lock nesting is possible.

vhost_worker will call tun call backs to receive packets. If too many
illegal packets arrives, tun_do_read will keep dumping packet contents.
When console is enabled, it will costs much more cpu time to dump
packet and soft lockup will be detected.

net_ratelimit mechanism can be used to limit the dumping rate.

Ethtool callbacks can be executed while reset is in progress and try to
access deleted resources, e.g. getting coalesce settings can result in a
NULL pointer dereference seen below.

Reproduction steps:
Once the driver is fully initialized, trigger reset:
	# echo 1 > /sys/class/net/<interface>/device/reset
when reset is in progress try to get coalesce settings using ethtool:
	# ethtool -c <interface>

Calling netif_device_detach() before reset makes the net core not call
the driver when ethtool command is issued, the attempt to execute an
ethtool command during reset will result in the following message:

    netlink error: No such device

instead of NULL pointer dereference. Once reset is done and
ice_rebuild() is executing, the netif_device_attach() is called to allow
for ethtool operations to occur again in a safe manner.

commit 44d1745 upstream.

Use a dedicated mutex to guard kvm_usage_count to fix a potential deadlock
on x86 due to a chain of locks and SRCU synchronizations. Translating the
below lockdep splat, CPU1 #6 will wait on CPU0 #1, CPU0 #8 will wait on
CPU2 #3, and CPU2 #7 will wait on CPU1 #4 (if there's a writer, due to the
fairness of r/w semaphores).

    CPU0                     CPU1                     CPU2
1   lock(&kvm->slots_lock);
2                                                     lock(&vcpu->mutex);
3                                                     lock(&kvm->srcu);
4                            lock(cpu_hotplug_lock);
5                            lock(kvm_lock);
6                            lock(&kvm->slots_lock);
7                                                     lock(cpu_hotplug_lock);
8   sync(&kvm->srcu);

Note, there are likely more potential deadlocks in KVM x86, e.g. the same
pattern of taking cpu_hotplug_lock outside of kvm_lock likely exists with
__kvmclock_cpufreq_notifier():

  cpuhp_cpufreq_online()
  |
  -> cpufreq_online()
     |
     -> cpufreq_gov_performance_limits()
        |
        -> __cpufreq_driver_target()
           |
           -> __target_index()
              |
              -> cpufreq_freq_transition_begin()
                 |
                 -> cpufreq_notify_transition()
                    |
                    -> ... __kvmclock_cpufreq_notifier()

But, actually triggering such deadlocks is beyond rare due to the
combination of dependencies and timings involved. E.g. the cpufreq
notifier is only used on older CPUs without a constant TSC, mucking with
the NX hugepage mitigation while VMs are running is very uncommon, and
doing so while also onlining/offlining a CPU (necessary to generate
contention on cpu_hotplug_lock) would be even more unusual.

The most robust solution to the general cpu_hotplug_lock issue is likely
to switch vm_list to be an RCU-protected list, e.g. so that x86's cpufreq
notifier doesn't to take kvm_lock. For now, settle for fixing the most
blatant deadlock, as switching to an RCU-protected list is a much more
involved change, but add a comment in locking.rst to call out that care
needs to be taken when walking holding kvm_lock and walking vm_list.

When updating hist maps it's also necessary to update the hist symbol
reference because the old one gets freed in map__put().

While this bug was probably introduced with 5c24b67 ("perf
tools: Replace map->referenced & maps->removed_maps with map->refcnt"),
the symbol objects were leaked until c087e94 ("perf machine:
Fix refcount usage when processing PERF_RECORD_KSYMBOL") was merged so
the bug was masked.

sys-oak pushed a commit that referenced this issue Oct 29, 2024
commit 9af2efe upstream.

The fields in the hist_entry are filled on-demand which means they only
have meaningful values when relevant sort keys are used.

So if neither of 'dso' nor 'sym' sort keys are used, the map/symbols in
the hist entry can be garbage. So it shouldn't access it
unconditionally.

I got a segfault, when I wanted to see cgroup profiles.

  $ sudo perf record -a --all-cgroups --synth=cgroup true

  $ sudo perf report -s cgroup

  Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.

As you can see the entry->ms.map was NULL even if he->ms.map has a
value. This is because 'sym' sort key is not given, so it cannot assume
whether he->ms.sym and entry->ms.sym is the same. I only checked the
'sym' sort key here as it implies 'dso' behavior (so maps are the same).

On the node of an NFS client, some files saved in the mountpoint of the

Analysing the vmcore, we know that nfs4_copy_state listed by destination
nfs_server->ss_copies was added by the field copies in handle_async_copy(),
and we found a waiting copy process with the stack as:
PID: 3511963 TASK: ffff710028b47e00 CPU: 0 COMMAND: "cp"

 #9 [ffff8001116efc50] __nfs4_copy_file_range.constprop.0 at ffff8000054ed694 [nfsv4]

The NULL-pointer dereference was due to nfs42_complete_copies() listed
the nfs_server->ss_copies by the field ss_copies of nfs4_copy_state.
So the nfs4_copy_state address ffff0100f98fa3f0 was offset by 0x10 and
the data accessed through this pointer was also incorrect. Generally,
the ordered list nfs4_state_owner->so_states indicate open(O_RDWR) or
open(O_WRITE) states are reclaimed firstly by nfs4_reclaim_open_state().
When destination state reclaim is failed with NFS_STATE_RECOVERY_FAILED
and copies are not deleted in nfs_server->ss_copies, the source state
may be passed to the nfs42_complete_copies() process earlier, resulting
in this crash scene finally. To solve this issue, we add a list_head
nfs_server->ss_src_copies for a server-to-server copy specially.

commit c728a95 upstream.

When testing the XDP_REDIRECT function on the LS1028A platform, we
found a very reproducible issue that the Tx frames can no longer be
sent out even if XDP_REDIRECT is turned off. Specifically, if there
is a lot of traffic on Rx direction, when XDP_REDIRECT is turned on,
the console may display some warnings like "timeout for tx ring #6
clear", and all redirected frames will be dropped, the detailed log
is as follows.

root@ls1028ardb:~# ./xdp-bench redirect eno0 eno2

By analyzing the XDP_REDIRECT implementation of enetc driver, the
driver will reconfigure Tx and Rx BD rings when a bpf program is
installed or uninstalled, but there is no mechanisms to block the
redirected frames when enetc driver reconfigures rings. Similarly,
XDP_TX verdicts on received frames can also lead to frames being
enqueued in the Tx rings. Because XDP ignores the state set by the
netif_tx_wake_queue() API, so introduce the ENETC_TX_DOWN flag to
suppress transmission of XDP frames.

commit 0a93f2c upstream.

The Tx BD rings are disabled first in enetc_stop() and the driver
waits for them to become empty. This operation is not safe while
the ring is actively transmitting frames, and will cause the ring
to not be empty and hardware exception. As described in the NETC
block guide, software should only disable an active Tx ring after
all pending ring entries have been consumed (i.e. when PI = CI).
Disabling a transmit ring that is actively processing BDs risks
a HW-SW race hazard whereby a hardware resource becomes assigned
to work on one or more ring entries only to have those entries be
removed due to the ring becoming disabled.

When testing XDP_REDIRECT feautre, although all frames were blocked
from being put into Tx rings during ring reconfiguration, the similar
warning log was still encountered:

fsl_enetc 0000:00:00.2 eno2: timeout for tx ring #6 clear
fsl_enetc 0000:00:00.2 eno2: timeout for tx ring #7 clear

The reason is that when there are still unsent frames in the Tx ring,
disabling the Tx ring causes the remaining frames to be unable to be
sent out. And the Tx ring cannot be restored, which means that even
if the xdp program is uninstalled, the Tx frames cannot be sent out
anymore. Therefore, correct the operation order in enect_start() and
enect_stop().

Ethtool callbacks can be executed while reset is in progress and try to
access deleted resources, e.g. getting coalesce settings can result in a
NULL pointer dereference seen below.

Reproduction steps:
Once the driver is fully initialized, trigger reset:
	# echo 1 > /sys/class/net/<interface>/device/reset
when reset is in progress try to get coalesce settings using ethtool:
	# ethtool -c <interface>

To do so, use
a different lockdep subclass where lock nesting is possible.

mkdir -p /mnt/nfs/netns_1
mkfs.ext4 /dev/sdb
mount /dev/sdb /mnt/nfsshare
systemctl restart nfs-server
chmod 777 /mnt/nfsshare

ip netns add netns_1
ip link add name veth_1_peer type veth peer veth_1
ifconfig veth_1_peer 11.11.0.254 up
ip link set veth_1 netns netns_1
ip netns exec netns_1 ifconfig veth_1 11.11.0.1

ip netns exec netns_1 /root/iptables -A OUTPUT -d 11.11.0.254 -p tcp \
	--tcp-flags FIN FIN  -j DROP

(note: In my environment, a DESTROY_CLIENTID operation is always sent
 immediately, breaking the nfs tcp connection.)
ip netns exec netns_1 timeout -s 9 300 mount -t nfs -o proto=tcp,vers=4.1 \
	11.11.0.254:/mnt/nfsshare /mnt/nfs/netns_1

ip netns del netns_1

The reason here is that the tcp socket in netns_1 (nfs side) has been
shutdown and closed (done in xs_destroy), but the FIN message (with ack)
is discarded, and the nfsd side keeps sending retransmission messages.
As a result, when the tcp sock in netns_1 processes the received message,
it sends the message (FIN message) in the sending queue, and the tcp timer
is re-established. When the network namespace is deleted, the net structure
accessed by tcp's timer handler function causes problems.

To fix this problem, let's hold netns refcnt for the tcp kernel socket as
done in other modules. This is an ugly hack which can easily be backported
to earlier kernels. A proper fix which cleans up the interfaces will
follow, but may not be so easy to backport.

syzkaller reported a use-after-free of UDP kernel socket
in cleanup_bearer() without repro. [0][1]

When bearer_disable() calls tipc_udp_disable(), cleanup
of the UDP kernel socket is deferred by work calling
cleanup_bearer().

tipc_net_stop() waits for such works to finish by checking
tipc_net(net)->wq_count. However, the work decrements the
count too early before releasing the kernel socket,
unblocking cleanup_net() and resulting in use-after-free.

Let's move the decrement after releasing the socket in
cleanup_bearer().

This due to we have quiesced admi_q before cancel requests, but forgot
to unquiesce before destroy it, as a result we fail to drain the
pending requests, and hang on blk_mq_freeze_queue_wait() forever. Here
try to reuse nvme_rdma_teardown_admin_queue() to fix this issue and
simplify the code.

Its used from trace__run(), for the 'perf trace' live mode, i.e. its
strace-like, non-perf.data file processing mode, the most common one.

The trace__run() function will set trace->host using machine__new_host()
that is supposed to give a machine instance representing the running
machine, and since we'll use perf_env__arch_strerrno() to get the right
errno -> string table, we need to use machine->env, so initialize it in
machine__new_host().

The 5760X (P7) chip's HW GRO/LRO interface is very similar to that of
the previous generation (5750X or P5). However, the aggregation ID
fields in the completion structures on P7 have been redefined from
16 bits to 12 bits. The freed up 4 bits are redefined for part of the
metadata such as the VLAN ID. The aggregation ID mask was not modified
when adding support for P7 chips. Including the extra 4 bits for the
aggregation ID can potentially cause the driver to store or fetch the
packet header of GRO/LRO packets in the wrong TPA buffer. It may hit
the BUG() condition in __skb_pull() because the SKB contains no valid
packet header:

Fix it by redefining the aggregation ID mask for P5_PLUS chips to be

When updating hist maps it's also necessary to update the hist symbol
reference because the old one gets freed in map__put().

While this bug was probably introduced with 5c24b67 ("perf
tools: Replace map->referenced & maps->removed_maps with map->refcnt"),
the symbol objects were leaked until c087e94 ("perf machine:
Fix refcount usage when processing PERF_RECORD_KSYMBOL") was merged so
the bug was masked.

sys-oak pushed a commit that referenced this issue Dec 26, 2024
commit 9af2efe upstream.

  $ sudo perf record -a --all-cgroups --synth=cgroup true

[ Upstream commit a848c29 ]

On the node of an NFS client, some files saved in the mountpoint of the
NFS server were copied to another location of the same NFS server.
Accidentally, the nfs42_complete_copies() got a NULL-pointer dereference
crash with the following syslog:

To solve this issue, we add a list_head
nfs_server->ss_src_copies for a server-to-server copy specially.
