Why does a variable not contain its assigned value?

Can someone please explain why the second command returns a different output than the first one (in v4.44.3)?

$ yq -n '({} | (.x = "x"))'
x: x
$ yq -n '({} | (.x = "x")) as $s | $s'
{}
