write up something on how to choose/benchmark bioinformatics software

Some questions and thoughts:

  • is there a local expert on some software or another who can help you with it?
  • citation - can you find a paper that has used the software to do what you want to do with it?
  • benchmark - is there a benchmark study that shows that the software performs OK against others?
  • concordance in results - does the result of using your chosen software/pipeline agree with others?
  • software reviewed - has the software itself been published/reviewed? (if so, this is a better sign than if it shows up in an appendix to a Science article about some biology.)
