When I use babel-cli I can require() a module that uses features that require babel, such as es6 imports. But in babel-repl I get the following error:

> require('./handlers')
/home/dschep/code/ui/api/handlers.js:1
(function (exports, require, module, __filename, __dirname) { import _ from 'lodash';
                                                              ^^^^^^
SyntaxError: Unexpected token import
