term colors in ghostty

I'm trying to determine why term colors aren't being well rendered in ghostty. I'm x-linking the discussion, on that repo, in case the context helps.

This isn't my area, but glad to dig/look, with a bit of direction.

I suspect that bat thinks the term is some low-color emulator, since there's a scant few colors that show.

iterm and terminal.app render bat, vim, and others normally.

If this is a ghostty issue, what might be the reason?

What in bat senses the term color abilities?

Make sure that your truecolor terminal sets the COLORTERM variable to either truecolor or 24bit. Otherwise, bat will not be able to determine whether or not 24-bit escape sequences are supported (and fall back to 8-bit colors).

well, oddly enough, when I unset COLORTERM it starts to work.

I guess there's a fallback to another way to determine/assume the color capabilities in that case? And it works then
