How to add keywords to the blacklist #19
Comments
The best way to do this is to fork this repository and add your new keywords to your copy of the blacklist. Using a text editor that has some type of “sort and remove duplicates” functionality (such as BBEdit or Atom will help locate similar keywords. You could also search the contents of the blacklist for your new keywords, add the ones that aren’t included, and then submit those changes through GitHub as a pull request. If that method is more complicated than you’d like, post the list of keywords here and I can evaluate them for inclusion in the blacklist. |

Thank you for reporting this. I’ll add a phrase to capture this type of comment. Cheers! |
Thanks @splorp Maybe it would make sense to keep an issue open for users to submit new phrases? |
PS, two new ones which came through: [Subject:] Do you want to have fun tonight? [Comment:] I'm 23. I have $30000. How can I best use it to make more money |
Good point. I’ll reopen this issue. And thank you for the additional spammy bits. |
I got this contact form submission on multiple sites:
|
And this one (I assume the part after "mins" is to create uniqueness and pass simple filters): $200 for 10 mins “work?”: |
Ok, there’s lots of spamtastic goodies to add in this one … |
We have received multiple submissions on a site using this blacklist with keywords like these: By and large a single blacklisted word would get these barring the ones where they have intentionally mangled the word. |
I’ve just added several variations of these phrases to the blacklist that cover both the “albendazole” and “albenza” variants. Thanks for the suggestions. |
In addition, it would be swell if the plugin retained manually added blacklist words like this one did: https://github.com/norcross/comment-blacklist-manager There are some that I would not want on a network of sites I manage, but that someone else may be open to. Like app developer pitches. Web redesign pitches. Guest article submission requests. Cryptocurrency, and on and on. I have had to add new ones, but when this plugin updates the list, it does not retain manually added ones. This is allowing quite a bit of nontypical spam through. |
You can always submit your new blacklist terms here and I’ll add them to the source. Is there a reason you’re not using the @norcross plugin? |
@lancedockins Phrases based on your comment have been added to the blacklist per commit 6d5c0ed |
Hi @splorp , I wanna contribute to this project in a more, "contributing", way. |
Just following up on this comment from @qx54 …
Apologies for the delay in getting back to this, but I did pull out a couple dozen phrases from your contact form example. Phrases based on your comment have been added to the blacklist per commit e6126eb |
Hi @fabriziosalmi … I like this idea quite a bit. I assume that you would also be running one of the blacklist updater plugins so that only previously unflagged (or uncaptured) spam gets reported. |
On our corporate blog we get quite a lot of spam that uses only three keyword pairs. So I would kindly ask you to include globe telecom to your otherwise excellent and really helpful list, since I would like to use the Block List Updater plugin. Best wishes, |
Hi @teezeh … these terms are much too general to include in the block list. There are many instances where these phrases could be used legitimately within a post or comment. If there were less common terms included around these phrases, then I might consider adding them. However, without any additional context, it’s hard for me to justify adding them, as is. If you are using a block list manager plugin such as @norcross’ Comment Blacklist Manager, you can add these terms to your Local Blacklist/Block List. Can you provide me with the entire spam text where these terms appear? That would help me see if there are any phrases that could potentially be added to the list. |
Hi Grant,
we get a lot of these spams which contain just two words, like these:
Actually, that's why I proposed to add these particular terms. I know that they are pretty generic (and I guess that is why the spammers use them).
I should install a local block list, I suppose.
Best wishes,
Thomas

not sure if i'm alone but i keep getting comments from the username Crytooress. |
Hi, @mcnamanna … could you provide some additional context for those comments? Adding usernames to the blocklist isn’t generally a good idea, unless they contain very specific spam-like phrases (seo, sex, etc.) If you can provide examples of the content from these comments, that would be a better place to start. Thanks. |
Sure! I will attach a screenshot. Full disclosure I just barely turned on
your full blacklist so some of these may have been filtered with your list.
It's just one I added because I kept getting these come through for
whatever reason.

I have some new keywords to be added as black list keywords. Is there some application to check for those keywords and if not, then added ? Thanks
