property: emendationOf #224

I totally overlooked this element in TCS 1, there is not even an issue for it, but I now like to propose the term The thing that made me look for this is the name 'Dicranoloma dicarpon' (https://www.tropicos.org/name/35121514). Dicranoloma dicarpon is an often reported moss in Australia and New Zealand. For the last 120 years, it has been consistently called 'Dicranoloma dicarpum'. I myself have used that spelling in a few publications. Only this weekend, I noticed that the spelling of the epithet in Tropicos had been changed to 'dicarpon'. Annoyingly, whoever did that was right to do so. I have now also changed it in AusMoss, and I can change it in our Collection Management System, but for the forseeable future, most occurrence records will come in under the name 'Dicranoloma dicarpum'. Also, the moss names in Catalogue of Life are from a world checklist from 1999. So, we need a way to tell that 'Dicranoloma dicarpum' and 'Dicranoloma dicarpon' are the same name. This property will do that. |
The mention of the presence of the term 'emendation' in the Zoological Code in #36 (comment) makes me wonder if I have interpreted the term If that is the case, the examples I have provided are inappropriate, as I have used @deepreef and/or @jliljeblad , could you shed your light on this? |
I am quite keen on restricting the use of |
This term needs a champion. And it should relate to something in one (or more) of the Codes, e.g. emendations in the ICZN. Otherwise we should leave it out, as this is not the best way to deal with orthographic errors/variants. |
Agree with you, Niels. Just because something is spelled differently, it can be difficult to know if it is intentional or not. Better to leave this for explicit emendations. I guess, however that orthographic variants can be of several kinds. Some spelling variants are simply variants such as abbreviations of the genus or use of ¨ above ë, whereas others are spelling errors (be it intentional or not). Then there are other questions, such as "do differently spelled authors make for a differently spelled name?" |
Okay, I will make it clear in the term and we'll talk about variants later. How about changing the label to |
