Thread Watcher Unread Count goes to 0 if links are directly clicked

If I right-click the links in the thread watcher and click 'Open in new tab', when I go to that tab my unread count remains accurate to the last time I was in that thread. However, if I directly left-click a link in the thread watcher, when I go to that thread the unread count goes to 0 despite the fact that I still have unread posts in that thread.
