feature request: break script into python modules

with a single debug run reaching close to 15 minutes, meaning I just idle while waiting what i coded is happening (and switching task is out of the question, i'll forget what i was doing and it will take more time to get back into it), it is important that we break the demultiplexing script into python modules and implement some (minor) unit testing for it
