This is a partial, or perhaps complete, response to #520. As the gem has grown, so has the documentation, and some comments have been made in the issues that it can be hard to find information. This PR attempts to address some of that feedback, mostly by providing some overview and motivation text at the beginning, with links to the relevant sections.
It provides a link at the top to switch back to the previous README.
