The glucose tolerance test, also known as the oral glucose tolerance test, measures your body's response to sugar (glucose). The glucose tolerance test can be used to screen for type 2 diabetes. More commonly, a modified version of the glucose tolerance test is used to diagnose gestational diabetes — a type of diabetes that develops during pregnancy. The glucose tolerance test identifies abnormalities in the way your body handles glucose after a meal — often before your fasting blood glucose level becomes abnormal. 1
A first blood sample will be drawn and your blood glucose level will be checked. Then you will be asked to drink a liquid that contains about 75 grams of sugar dissolved in water. After that, your blood will be drawn every hour for the next 2 hours. Each sample will be checked to measure the levels of glucose. 1, 2

In a study on Hypoglycemic coma 3 the authors refer to a study from 1985 4, 5, that included a terminal cancer patient with a blood glucose level as low as 2 mg/dL. Given that, a plausible low value of 1 mg/dL does not seem unreasonable. Diabetic hypersmoler syndrome is diagnosed for glucose levels greater than 600 mg/dL 6, but levels exceeding 1000 mg/dL have been observed in the literature as well 7. Given that, a plausible high value of 1,100 mg/dL is suggested.
