Out of Hours and Lone Working

This page outlines our policies and suggestions for individuals working out of hours at DoES Liverpool, at times when there are no DoES Liverpool volunteers around, or simply times when you may be the only person in the space. Our main hours are generally Monday - Friday, 9:30am - 5:30pm although during the COVID-19 pandemic we will not be manning the space during these hours. Outside these hours or when you find yourself at the space on your own or when there are no DoES Liverpool volunteers around, you should follow this page.

IN CASE OF EMERGENCIES

  • In case of fire
    • Follow the Fire Escape Procedure
    • When you are safe, call the DoES Liverpool emergency number 0151 660 6999 to inform the Directors.
  • In case of injury
    • Deal with your injury first, this is the most important thing. Proceed to The Royal Hospital on Prescot Street if possible or dial 999 from a DoES Liverpool phone, or a mobile phone, and request an ambulance.
    • When you are safe and able, or if someone else can do it, call the DoES Liverpool emergency number 0151 660 6999 to inform the Directors.
  • In case of a threat to personal safety
    • If you are concerned about other people within the building, if you think your safety is at risk or that burglary is being committed then dial 999 from a DoES Liverpool phone, or a mobile phone, and request the police.
    • When you are safe and able, call the DoES Liverpool emergency number 0151 660 6999 to inform the Directors.
  • The DoES Liverpool emergency number will go directly to the mobile numbers of multiple Directors of DoES Liverpool. It should not be used to report problems with machinery, lack of consumables or spilt milk.
    • The most obvious time to use the emergency number other than for fire, injury or a threat to personal safety (for all of which you should call the emergency services first) is if you have issues securing the building.
    • If for some reason you are not able to secure the building you may use the emergency number.
    • If you become stuck within a room and no-one else is in the building (or is responding) you may use the emergency number.
    • If you leave your key fob inside the space and get trapped in the communal areas you may consider using the emergency number. Please consider whether the inconvenience of waking someone up would be greater than you having to return the following morning to retrieve your belongings. If you have your house keys and coat and could safely return home that might be a better option. If you have no coat, no money and no keys then of course you will need to call the emergency number.

General Rules

  • No sleeping in the space. Respect the space and the people within it, this is not your personal private space (even if you’re the only person there at the time!) Also respect our neighbours both within the building and in neighbouring buildings.
    • Sleeping in the space is a particular risk in case of fire and is also not covered under our insurance or the landlord's insurance.
  • If you are on your own in the space then be careful using the more dangerous pieces of equipment, for example the CNC router should not be used if nobody else is in the space.
  • The front door of the building on Kempston Street comprises of an outer shutter and an inner magnetic locking door.
    • You must be comfortable working both the door and the shutter and know how to open and close the shutter from the outside and inside of the building.
    • When entering the building be sure to make sure that the doors shut properly behind you, if both doors are opened it is possible that they will close in an insecure way.
  • You are responsible for anyone that you allow into the space. You should not allow people in through the Intercom out of hours. Anyone who is allowed to be in should be able to use their access fob to get in. If you are unsure then you are welcome to ignore the intercom. If you bring someone into the space then you are responsible for them while they are in the space.
  • You should save the emergency number in your mobile phone.
  • You are responsible for your own key fob or other relevant RFID devices. Out of business hours that will be your only way to gain access.
  • Membership is a benefit that you are paying for yourself. We understand that you may want to bring someone in to help with your project at times but if they are taking up space then they may need to pay for their own access.
  • Don’t take the mickey.

If you are among the last to leave, make sure you have followed the locking up procedure.
